Verbs can be divided into regular and irregular. Each type follow different conjugation rules. For Regular Verbs, there are four spelling rules to change the verbs into the past and the past participle form.

Regular Verbs
The characteristic of these verbs is to add -ed to the base form of the verbs to turn it into past form and past participle form.
accept → accepted → accepted

Irregular Verbs
This verbs are called like this because they change their form in the past and the past participle form. They do not follow an specific rule as regular verbs do.
teach → taught → taught
eat → ate → eaten
